Roumen Farms Wholesale Nursery, nestled in the serene Georges Valley of Tzaneen, Limpopo, South Africa, embodies the essence of agricultural diversity. Primarily a commercial avocado and timber farm, it boasts an array of produce including mangoes, litchis, and even goats.
The genesis of the nursery traces back to the passion of Hilton and Liza Atherstone for clivias, sparked by their love for nature and gardening. What commenced as a hobby flourished into a thriving wholesale nursery. The inaugural transaction, trading four bunches of Alstroemerias from the farm garden to the local home industry in the late 1990s, marked the inception of the enterprise. This initial success spurred the development of cut flower terraces, swiftly followed by landscape and nursery terraces. To this day, cut flowers remain a staple, cultivated for the local market.
Hilton Atherstone's dedication culminated in the extensive clivia collection, adorned with numerous new hybrids and award-winning specimens. The addition of two clivia breeding shade houses in 2019 underscores the commitment to innovation, housing the latest breeding seedlings.
The farm's picturesque garden, adorned with myriad clivia hybrids, serves as an idyllic breeding ground for commercial clivia stock. Seasonal upgrades ensure the transmission of quality seeds to the landscape nursery. The expansion of garden clivias to an adjacent plantation further underscores their commitment to excellence, providing ample stock for gardening enthusiasts, landscapers, and retail outlets alike. Bulk clivia seeds, predominantly orange hybrids, are also available seasonally, with harvesting commencing around the end of May/June annually.
Complementing the garden's sunlit expanses are enchanting clusters of agapanthus, alstroemerias, and American daylilies hybrids, lending vibrant hues to the landscape during spring and summer.
In a bid to sustain interest throughout the year, the nursery has diversified extensively since 2006, incorporating an eclectic mix of ornamental and indigenous plants, ensuring a tapestry of botanical delight for patrons.
